Earlier this week I was able to cover the first half of ‘The Elvis Years’ at the Lighthouse in Poole. Featuring Mario Kombou (“the best Elvis since Elvis” according to Donna Presley, Elvis’ cousin), the show was a roll call of The King’s most well known songs and featured numerous costume changes against a backdrop of footage of his life.
I managed to get a great vantage point and the show provided some entertaining shots, including Elvis’ Sun Studio breakthrough, his army years and the Vegas performances. Shooting live acts can pose specific problems, not least the lack of light and the continual movement so it’s always a balancing act between exposure, shutter speed and waiting for the right moment. Needless to say, I made my way home with the tunes of Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog and Suspicious Minds humming in my head.
